A number of considerations should be considered regarding the expected label life once the product has been labelled. Direct thermal printed labels do not offer the same life as a thermal transfer printed label.
If the product being labelled could be in the field for a lengthy time, say over one-year, or maybe in harsh type environments such as direct sunlight, then the technology used for these applications should be thermal transfer which uses a ribbon as the ink. However if the product has a relatively short life say in the supply chain or on short-life food products or courier and delivery operations then direct thermal would probably prove ideal for the application.
