Thermal Transfer Printers – A Definition:

A thermal transfer printer is a non-impact printer that uses heat to register an impression on paper. A thermal transfer printer has a printhead containing many small resistive heating pins that on contact, depending on the type of thermal transfer printer, melt wax-based ink onto ordinary paper. A microprocessor determines which individual heating pins are heated to produce the printed image. The printhead spans the entire width of the paper or medium to be printed on. The thermal transfer ribbon fits between the printhead and the substrate (label/tag) and the image is effectively transferred from the thermal transfer ribbon onto the medium to be printed. Typical materials are paper, synthetics and card. Thermal transfer printers are very popular for the printing of bar codes, self-adhesive labels, price labels, and many other speciality print jobs.

Thermal transfer print heads come in a range of print resolution options. The standard is 203dpi, usually referred to as 200dpi, 300dpi and for the highest print quality 600dpi. Most printers are purchased with the most suitable resolution for the application at time of order because generally it is not possible to change the resolution of a specific printer once supplied. That said, there are a very few exceptions where this can be done.
